Cataracts are caused by a clouding of the lens inside of the eye. They generally occur because of aging and indeed, by age 80, half of all people have cataracts or have had cataract surgery. There are, however, a variety of other causes including congenital and secondary, due to systemic diseases, medications or trauma.

Cataracts occur generally in both eyes and can blur the vision causing increased glare and haloes around lights, double vision and decreased appreciation of colors. Sewing, reading and even driving can become nearly impossible.

Once a cataract forms it generally progresses causing your vision to get even dimmer. There are no known medical treatments for cataracts, but fortunately, we can successfully cure cataracts and help you see clearly again by removing and replacing it with a clear artificial lens.

Our doctors remove cataracts with the latest ultrasound techniques that allow us to use no stitches and no injections. The procedure is performed at the hospital or out-patient facility and takes about 10 minutes after which you can go home. One eye is done at a time, with the other one being done a few weeks later. The first lens implants were placed in 1949 so we know their long term safety and effectiveness and since there is no feeling in the eye, you won’t even know it is there!

Today, having cataract surgery is easier and more successful than ever before and more exciting now because our patients have the opportunity to reduce or even eliminate their need for glasses with the new Premium lens implants.
