Since woman typically live longer than men, eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration, which are specific to the aging process, are diagnosed more frequently in women. Also dry eye syndrome is more predominant in women which can be caused by hormonal changes and the hormonal ups and downs throughout life from menstruation, pregnancy and menopause can also impact vision. Autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and lupus are diagnosed more in women and can significantly affect vision too.

 What Can Women Do To Help Prevent Vision Loss

  1. Make time for a yearly comprehensive eye examination to determine the health of your eyes and keep track of any changes especially if there is a family history of eye disease.
  2. Monitor your weight and diet. Being overweight and not eating a healthy diet can affect your vision and lead to medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
  3. Replace old eye makeup about every three months and do not share makeup with others as this can spread germs and bacteria.
  4. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and air-pollutants.
