What You Wouldn’t Think Can Cause Dry Eyes

1). Sjogren’s Syndrome. Sjogren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disease that attacks the glands that produce and control moisture in your body. Due to decreased tear production, your eyes may feel extremely dry, gritty and burn. Sjogren’s Syndrome is a common autoimmune disease, which can be detected during a Dry Eye evaluation at CarlinVision.

2).  Eczema. Eczema is an atopic (allergic) dermatitis that can cause dryness, inflammation and itching on the eyelids and around the eyes. This makes it difficult for the eyes to produce enough tears, which increases the irritability and dryness of the eye.

3). Hormones. Hormonal fluctuations, specifically estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, can disrupt the natural tear production and quality, which then leads to dry eyes. These hormones play a role in maintaining the homeostasis of the ocular surface and when their levels change, tear production can be affected.

4). Blepharitis. Blepharitis is a common condition in which the eyelids become inflamed due to an overgrowth of bacteria, fungi or parasites at the base of the eyelashes. This condition can cause blockages in the Meibomian glands, which are responsible for secreting oils that prevent tear evaporation. When these glands are compromised, it can result in dry eye symptoms and discomfort. At CarlinVision, we can treat this inflammatory condition and help to relieve you of the uncomfortable dry eye it causes.

If you are experiencing any dry eye irritation or discomfort, our accredited Dry Eye center at CarlinVision is ready to assist. We are dedicated to providing effective solutions to enhance your eye comfort and health.

How to Choose the Best Sunglasses for Eye Health

At CarlinVision, we’re passionate about helping you protect your sight all year long—especially during the summer. While you’re protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, don’t forget your eyes! Prolonged sun exposure can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and even growths on the eye like pingueculae and pterygiums. The right pair of sunglasses can help protect your vision while keeping you stylish.

Here at CarlinVision, many of our patients ask: Are polarized lenses really necessary? Polarized lenses are specifically designed to reduce glare from reflective surface like water, sand, and pavement. They’re especially helpful for driving or spending time on the water. Whether you have summer plans around the water or a long commute to work, polarized sunglasses can make a noticeable difference in visual clarity and comfort.

Choosing the right tint for your lenses can also influence comfort and visibility. A gray lens tint can reduce brightness without distorting color and is great for everyday use, a brown tint can enhance contrast and is a great option for sports and activity, and a yellow tint is useful in low light but not ideal for full sun days. Our Optical team can help you choose the best tint for your lifestyle.

Lastly, it’s important to choose well-made frames from trusted brands—because when it comes to your vision, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality or style. The Optical Boutique at CarlinVision carries over 1200 frames allowing us to provide first quality options for all tastes and budgets. And for a limited time only, you can buy one pair and receive your second pair for 40% off! Our Opticians look forward to assisting you this summer.

Bright Eyes for Summer! Is It Time to Consider Blepharoplasty?

Summer is a season of sunshine, photos, and social events- and it’s also a time when many people think about freshening up their appearance. If droopy eyelids or puffy bags under your eyes are making you look more tired than you feel, blepharoplasty (also known as Eyelid Rejuvenation) might be the solution. At CarlinVision, we offer this bladeless and minimally invasive procedure to help you look more refreshed, alert and youthful.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It’s commonly performed for cosmetic reasons, but it can also be medically necessary if sagging eyelids interfere with your vision. Many people choose summer for their blepharoplasty procedure because of more flexible schedules, time off for healing during vacations or long weekends, and the desire to look their best for upcoming events and travel. Most patients return to normal daily activities within 7-10 days, and swelling and bruising typically resolves in a couple weeks.

Our experienced surgeons perform blepharoplasty with precision and care—right here in our state-of-the-art surgical center in Snellville. Whether you’re seeking better vision, a more youthful appearance, or both, our Oculoplastics Surgical Counselor, Daelyn, can help you determine if this procedure is right for you.

Can you Wear Contact Lenses While Swimming? What You Need to Know

Swimming with contact lenses can expose your eyes to harmful microorganisms and chemicals. The main risks include:

1). Infection. Water, especially in a lake or ocean contain bacterias, viruses and parasites that can cause harmful infections to your eyes.

2). Corneal Irritation. Chlorine and salt water can cling to soft contact lenses and cause irritation, redness, and blurry vision.

3). Lens loss or displacement. Water can loosen or wash away your contact lenses, especially when diving.

At CarlinVision, we recommend avoiding any water contact with contact lenses. If you’re tired of juggling contacts, glasses, or goggles on vacation, summer can be a popular time to explore Lasik or other refractive procedures. We are happy to discuss your options at your next visit!
