Why Do I Have to Quit Wearing My Contacts Before Lasik?

One of the most frequently asked questions that our Lasik Coordinators receive at CarlinVision is: “Why do I have to quit wearing my contacts before my Lasik pre-operative appointment?” The truth is simple. Contact lens use can actually change the shape of your cornea. When you stop wearing contact lenses your cornea will return to its natural shape. However, it can take time. Your surgeon will need to take measurements before your surgery and these tests are most accurate when done on the natural shape of the eye. Essentially, taking out your contacts and allowing your cornea to return to its normal shape ensures a better visual outcome for your procedure.

Your Contact Lenses Determine The Length of Time

The type of contact lenses that each patient uses (gas permeable, soft, or daily) and their habits (like sleeping in their lenses) will determine how far in advance they need to remove their contacts. Your surgeon will give you a recommended amount of time, which is usually around 10 days, but can be up to six weeks. Some surgeons will provide the patient with complementary glasses (if they do not already have some) so that they are able to see clearly during the interim. Here at CarlinVision, we provide our patients with this service at no cost. (If you are a patient at CarlinVision be sure to ask about Lasik Loaner Glasses.)

Get Your Best Visual Outcome

Lasik is a big investment and a life changing decision. It is important to be completely honest with your surgeon, and to follow all of their recommendations, so that you can achieve the best possible corrected vision.
