A cataract, or clouding of the lens inside the eye, is a part of the natural aging process. While the prospect of cataract surgery can be fear-provoking, the procedure is actually quite benign. As the MOST common elective surgery among Medicare beneficiaries, multiple studies demonstrate that it is over 98% successful and leads to an improved quality of life, reduced risk of falling and fewer car crashes. In fact, one study found that those who had cataract surgery had a 40% lower long-term mortality.
As to when to have cataract surgery — it’s up to you, not dictated by the doctor!
Factors to consider:
- Are your cataracts impacting your daily or occupational activities?
- Are your cataracts affecting your ability to drive safely at night?
- Are your cataracts interfering with the outdoor activities you enjoy?
If so, talk to your doctor about your options. Remember, we are here to help you! Give our surgical counselors a call at 770.979.2020 x245.
